I’ll be honest, I have a very minimalistic approach when taking supplements. The truth is that the supplement business is great at getting people to spend their money, but not always so great at getting the customer any results. One such supplement that I have perceived to be commonly attributed to helping with fat loss has no research to back that claim. That supplement is conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA. In short here is a summary of CLA.

CLA has been investigated to be a fat burner and health promoting agent due to its effect on a molecular signalling receptor family named PPAR which is related to fat burning, steroid signalling, inflammation, and glucose/lipid metabolism.
However, human studies on CLA are very unreliable and the overall effects seen with CLA are not overly potent as well as sometimes contradicting.” 
After large amounts of testing CLA in terms of its effects on lean mass, fat mass, insulin sensitivity, and weight, CLA had insufficient results to support positive effects in any of those areas.  The only positive results in any study with CLA was that in one study it resulted in decrease of liver fat. However, this study was done on mice. When tested with humans, there has been no similar effect.
In short, there is no support to the hype and claims backing CLA that in increases fat loss. If you have seemed to found success with CLA while dieting, that is because you are dieting. Your main focus for weight loss is to make sure that you are in a caloric deficit. Unfortunately if you walked into a supplement store, this would probably be on the shelf and recommended to you.
Unless the results of the studies on this supplement change drastically, you can save some money by cutting this supplement out of your stack.
